jeon yulhee's birth was never considered a blessing.

despite being the second child born into the family, jeon mo abhorred the fact that his wife gave him another daughter; yet another lost opportunity to gain an heir, he had said. nevertheless, yulhee was brought up in the same standards as her older sister. . . to follow the tradition that their female predecessors have undertaken time and again.

and that was acceptable: as a young child, yulhee had lofty dreams but never the right mindset, often switching preferences much like changing hanboks every day—becoming a governess was the safest choice, and since her new sibling (an older brother! how exciting) has arrived, there was no need to fret over whether she could be considered the next head of the household; she would remain the second young lady of the house and live her merry way, free of the constraints befitting that of the heir.

that mindset changed drastically during her sixteenth spring.

an incidental finding about how their own father—kin, by flesh and blood—was mistreating her older sister had angered yulhee so, and yet at her tender age she could not do anything that might be of significant help. it was at this point in her life that she realized she had been living in the shadows of her clan, unable to depart from their conventions. . . earning the notion a profound hatred that bloomed within her heart.
